Vijay Varma, known for his captivating performances in films such as Darlings, Jaane Jaan, and the acclaimed series Mirzapur, is setting his sights on Hollywood. In a recent interview with Variety, the actor expressed enthusiasm about the current landscape for Indian actors in the West, noting the increasing inclusivity and variety of roles available.
Varma, who began his career with minor roles, steadily gained recognition in both Bollywood and regional cinema thanks to his impressive acting skills. Now, he believes it’s an opportune moment to broaden his horizons and seek new challenges in Hollywood.
“It’s a very good time to make that jump,” Varma stated, highlighting the shift in how Indian actors are perceived in the industry. In the past, opportunities for South Asian actors were often limited to specific stereotypes. However, the landscape is changing, with a growing trend of “colour-blind casting” that allows for a broader range of roles. This shift has already benefited actors like Ishaan Khatter and Ali Fazal, who have secured prominent projects in the West.
Varma noted, “With more acceptance coming from international producers and directors looking at Indian diaspora actors and brown actors for a variety of roles, it’s a very lucrative time.” As a result, he plans to dedicate the first half of 2025 to exploring interesting work opportunities in Hollywood.
On the work front, Vijay was recently seen in IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. He is set to appear next in Ul Jalool Ishq, where he will share the screen with esteemed actors Naseeruddin Shah, Sharib Hashmi, and Fatima Sana Shaikh.
Varma’s aspirations reflect a broader trend of Indian actors breaking into international markets, propelled by a demand for diversity and authentic representation in storytelling. As Hollywood continues to evolve, the inclusion of talents like Vijay Varma promises to enrich the cinematic landscape and provide audiences with a wider array of narratives. With his sights firmly set on new horizons, fans eagerly await the next chapter in Varma’s promising career.
