Neena Gupta Wants Her Granddaughter, Matara To Call Her By Name, Says, “Don’t Call Me Naani”

Neena Gupta recently revealed how she wants her granddaughter, Matara, to address her once she begins to speak. Neena Gupta, a seasoned actor, has never been one to follow the rules. She has consistently blazed her own trail in both her personal and professional lives. Therefore, it was only natural for her to have a distinct viewpoint when she accepted the role of grandparent. The actress recently revealed that when her granddaughter Matara learns to speak, she wants to be addressed by her.

Neena Gupta wants her granddaughter to call her by name

Neena Gupta’s relationship with Matara is more contemporary than that of traditional grandparents.  Neena Gupta recently told ANI in an open interview that she doesn’t feel like a grandma and that she has requested her granddaughter Matara to address her by name rather than the customary naani.  The actress revealed: “I don’t feel like a grandmother. In fact, I have told the little one not to call me Naani but, call me Neena.”

Neena Gupta’s daughter, Masaba’s journey of motherhood

Masaba Gupta, Neena Gupta’s daughter, gave love another try with actor Satyadeep Mishra following her previous failed marriage to film producer Madhu Mantena. After getting married in 2015, she and Madhu experienced difficulties in their marriage, which ultimately resulted in their formal separation in September 2019. Aditi Rao Hydari’s ex-wife of Satyadeep and later he got married to Masaba. On January 27, 2023, the couple were married.

On the auspicious Maha Ashtami, October 11, 2024, Masaba and Satyadeep embraced parenthood after sharing stunning moments from their prenatal journey. The following day, October 12, 2024, the couple joyfully announced the arrival of their little Lakshmi on Instagram.

Neena Gupta, now a proud grandmother, was the first to share a glimpse of her granddaughter on social media. In January 2025, Masaba celebrated a touching milestone as a new mother, revealing a gold bangle engraved with her daughter’s name, Matara, when the baby turned three months old. In the caption, Masaba shared the meaningful story behind the name. “3 months with my Matara. The name embodies the divine feminine energies of 9 Hindu goddesses, celebrating their strength and wisdom. Also, the star of our eyes!”

On the professional front, Neena Gupta is gearing up for her next film, ‘Hindi-Vindi’, produced by Sunny Shah, Anil Sharma, and Aniket Deshkar. Starring Mihir Ahuja and Australian singer Guy Sebastian, the film delves into intergenerational language barriers within the migrant community. Neena takes on the role of a sharp-witted grandmother who also works as a music teacher in India. Speaking about the project, she shared: 

“It is an emotional and very real story that people will connect with, and it has a major part in the movies, the music, and that’s why we have Guy (Sebastian) who is playing his father. So it has a lot of beautiful music, it has a lot of emotions, and it is very real.”
