The debate around item numbers in Indian cinema has long divided the industry and audiences. While songs like Sheila Ki Jawani featuring Katrina Kaif and Munni Badnaam starring Malaika Arora became massive hits, they also attracted criticism from some viewers for objectifying women. Recently, actor Ananya Panday weighed in on the topic during an interview, offering her perspective on the portrayal of women in such songs.

In a conversation with Humans of Bombay, Ananya Panday was asked about her stance on item numbers and whether she would consider doing one herself. The actor, who has made her mark in Bollywood with her performances in films like Student of the Year 2 and Pati Patni Aur Woh, provided a thoughtful response. She emphasized the responsibility of being creative, noting that actors must be mindful of what they portray on screen, especially in a country where the audience is highly impressionable.

Ananya Panday’s Criteria for Doing an Item Number

When asked if she would ever take on an item number, Ananya said, “There are ways in which you can do it. If I feel like the girl is being empowered through the song, if she has control, if she’s not being overtly sexualised or disrespected, then I wouldn’t mind doing it.” She further explained that her decision would depend on how the song frames the woman’s role, suggesting that viewing such performances from a fresh perspective is important. “Everything doesn’t have to be done in the way that it’s been done for so many years,” she added.

Ananya went on to elaborate that it is possible to present a character in a “sexy” manner without crossing into objectification or exploitation. “It’s about just switching the control to the girl instead of the man,” she said, making a case for a more balanced portrayal of women in item numbers.

A Refreshing Take on a Controversial Subject

Ananya’s thoughtful take on the subject offers a refreshing viewpoint, highlighting the potential for change in how item numbers are approached in Indian cinema. Fans will no doubt be intrigued by her perspective and may look forward to seeing her in such a role, provided it aligns with her criteria.

On the work front, Ananya is gearing up for her next OTT project, titled CTRL.
