The much-anticipated film Jigra, directed by Vasan Bala and starring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina, hit theatres today, only to receive mixed reactions from both critics and audiences. While Alia’s performance, the film’s storyline, and Bala’s direction were widely praised, some viewers expressed dissatisfaction with the overall execution. The tepid response has already impacted box office performance, with theatre owners cancelling several shows due to poor attendance.

According to data from Sacnilk, Jigra garnered a lacklustre Rs 3.58 crore (net) across all languages on its opening day in India. This underwhelming performance raises concerns for its prospects in the highly competitive market.

Adding to the drama, actress Kangana Ranaut took to Instagram with a cryptic message many interpreted as a jab at Jigra and its producers. In her post, Kangana discussed the concept of karma, writing, “When you destroy woman-centric films and make sure that they don’t work, they don’t work, even when you make them. Read that again. Thanks.” Though she didn’t name Jigra directly, the timing and tone of her post sparked speculation that it was aimed at the film.

Kangana has previously criticised Alia Bhatt’s work, most notably for her performance in Gully Boy. After the film’s release, Kangana remarked, “I am embarrassed…What is there to beat in Gully Boy Performance… same snappy muhfat girl… Bollywood’s idea of a fiery girl, woman empowerment and good acting, spare me this embarrassment, please.”

Despite the ongoing criticism, Alia Bhatt has maintained a composed response. Addressing Kangana’s earlier remarks, she said, “I respect Kangana’s work a lot and I respect her opinion. If she feels a particular way, she must have a reason to feel that way.”

About Jigra movie:

Jigra revolves around Satya, played by Bhatt, who embarks on a perilous mission to rescue her brother Ankur, portrayed by Vedang Raina, from wrongful imprisonment in a foreign country. The film is co-produced by Dharma Productions and Eternal Sunshine Productions.

However, Jigra faces stiff competition at the box office from Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri’s Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, further challenging its chances of a strong recovery.
