Read what Sushmita Sen had to say when Karan Johar questioned why she thought she deserved to beat Aishwarya Rai to the title of Femina Miss India in 1994. Before obtaining the titles of Miss Universe and Miss World, respectively, in 1994, Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai competed against one another in the Miss India contest. The judges’ favourite contender was Aishwarya, who was already well-known thanks to her modelling career. Sushmita Sen wasn’t as well-known back then, though.

Sushmita finally defeated Aishwarya, and she was named Miss India in 1994. Following their participation in the esteemed Miss India competition, both actresses have had prosperous Bollywood careers. But when questioned if she was deserving of the title more than Aishwarya, Sushmita Sen had the perfect answer.

Sushmita was asked by host Karan Johar if she believed she deserved to win the Miss India crown that evening when she first appeared on Koffee With Karan in 2005. Sushmita just answered, “Definitely.” If she had compared her performance to that of Aishwarya Rai, Karan questioned her later. In response, Sushmita said that she didn’t hold Aishwarya’s performance against her and that she deserved to win. She thought that Aishwarya was wonderful on stage. Sushmita continued by stating that she was chosen as Miss India because she was at her best, not because Aishwarya was inferior to her. When speaking about the matter, Sushmita Sen said:

“I don’t compare myself to Aishwarya’s performance. I think she was fabulous on stage. I do believe in two things: One, that night, I was the best and that’s why I deserved to win, not because I was better than someone else. It is only because I was at my best.”

She elaborated further and added one more reason for why she had deserved the victory that evening. Sushmita went on to remark that she had more luck that night than everybody else. Her shooting star passed directly over her head, which has big implications if you’re competing for anything. She continued by saying that other females also made an attempt, just as hard as she did. Sushmita Sen believes that she also got a little luck in winning the crown. She stated:

“And the other, I think I was luckier than everyone else that night. My shooting star went right over my head, and that’s an important thing at times when you are competing for anything. It’s not just your hard work because there are 20-30 other girls who put in equal or more amount of hard work. It is also that dash of luck I had that night.”

Notable actress Sushmita Sen truly deserves all the honours and love for her fans.
