In 2023, the entertainment world was stunned when actor and musician Joe Jonas filed for divorce from his wife of four years, Sophie Turner, best known for her role in Game of Thrones. The couple’s separation, filed on the grounds of “irreconcilable differences,” quickly led to a high-profile custody battle over their two daughters, Willa, born in 2020, and Delphine, born in 2022. Earlier this month, the legal dispute over the children’s custody was finally resolved.

In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, as reported by Page Six, Turner shared her experiences of single motherhood and the challenges it has brought into her life. Speaking about her role in the upcoming series Joan, where she portrays real-life criminal Joan Hannington, Turner said that being a mother had a significant influence on her performance.

“If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it,” Turner remarked. She continued, “It’s such a struggle being a single mother. Joan doesn’t go about it in the best way … but it is amazing to see her really fighting for her daughter.”

Turner also addressed the societal pressures and stigmas associated with motherhood, particularly when balancing a career. “It’s really important for kids to see just how hard parents work for them,” she explained. “There’s so much shame that comes with motherhood. You go to work, you’re shamed. If you don’t go to work, you’re shamed.”

Turner and Jonas first met in 2016, and their whirlwind romance led to an engagement the following year. The couple tied the knot in a spontaneous Las Vegas ceremony in 2019, followed by a more formal celebration in France. Turner relocated from England to New York City to live with Jonas, where they began their family.

Announcing their separation, the couple released a joint statement, saying, “After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision, and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”
