Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai has made headlines with his candid remarks about some of Bollywood’s most iconic actors. In a promotional clip for the upcoming season of his chat show, The Invincibles Series, Ghai did not hold back when asked by actor-producer Arbaaz Khan about various celebrities, including Jackie Shroff and Shatrughan Sinha.
Ghai, known for his straightforward approach, categorized actors into five types, stating, “There are five types of actors. One is a non-actor, and another is a bad actor.” He did not hesitate to label Jackie Shroff as a “bad actor,” while praising Anil Kapoor’s acting abilities. He described Shatrughan Sinha as an “overconfident actor,” noting, “Shatrughan’s biggest problem was that he was never on time.”
Ghai’s professional relationships with these actors are well-documented. He directed Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor in the 1989 blockbuster Ram Lakhan, among other projects. His collaborations with Shatrughan Sinha include acclaimed films such as Kalicharan (1976) and Vishwanath (1978).
The filmmaker also spoke about his working relationship with Shah Rukh Khan, with whom he collaborated on the 1997 film Pardes. Ghai revealed that they often had disagreements, saying, “I used to have tiffs with Shah Rukh during Pardes. After Karz (1980), I decided not to work with current stars if I wanted to make a good film.”
Additionally, Ghai addressed his reputation as the “showman” of Indian cinema, expressing discomfort with the label. He prefers not to see himself in such a light, despite his illustrious career in the film industry. Ghai’s notable works include Kalicharan (1976), Vishwanath (1978), Karz (1980), Hero (1983), Vidhaata (1982), Meri Jung (1985), Karma (1986), Ram Lakhan (1989), Saudagar (1991), Khalnayak (1993), Pardes (1997), and Taal (1999).
As the new season of The Invincibles Series approaches, Ghai’s unfiltered comments are sure to ignite discussions and debates among Bollywood fans and industry insiders alike.
