Renowned for their commitment to fitness, cricketer Virat Kohli and actress Anushka Sharma have integrated regular exercise and balanced nutrition into their daily routines. In a recent discussion, Kohli’s nutritionist, Ryan Fernando, shared insights into how Kohli sought his expertise during the COVID-19 pandemic to create a tailored diet plan for Anushka during her pregnancy with their first child, Vamika.

Speaking with celebrity fitness expert Yasmin Karachiwala on her YouTube channel, Ryan detailed how Virat reached out during a time of isolation. “Virat contacted me around the pandemic time,” Ryan explained. “He wanted to elevate his nutrition game, so we worked together for several months on his diet.” He further revealed that recognising the importance of Anushka’s health, Virat asked if Ryan could develop a comprehensive nutrition plan for her throughout the different trimesters of her pregnancy. “He wanted me to handle her trimester nutrition plans, which we did very successfully,” Ryan noted.

During the conversation, Ryan also addressed a common misconception regarding prenatal nutrition: the belief that expecting mothers need to consume double the calories. He emphasised that this notion is gradually changing as more women gain access to accurate information about nutrition during pregnancy.

Yasmin, who has worked with other celebrities like Alia Bhatt during her pregnancy, added her perspective on the need for customised fitness routines for pregnant women. “With exercise, like with nutrition, you have to tailor it to the specific trimester,” she explained. Reflecting on her experience training Alia, she shared, “Working with Alia was funny and beautiful. She came to me saying, ‘I’m pregnant but I need to exercise.’ We customised her workouts to keep them interesting because Alia exercises daily and doesn’t want to feel limited by her body.”

 

Yasmin noted the importance of keeping workouts engaging, particularly for clients with shorter attention spans. “If I give her 20 repetitions, I’ve lost her by the eighth one. Her workouts need to be crisp and varied to keep her focused,” she added.

As Kohli and Sharma navigate parenthood, their approach to fitness and nutrition continues to serve as an inspiration for many, showcasing the importance of maintaining health during all stages of life.
