Abhay Deol Recalls Being Humiliated By His Teacher In Class Due To His Family Background: ‘She Didn’t Like…’

Abhay Deol recently participated in an interview with Humans of Bombay, where he reminisced about his childhood experiences. He revealed that during his school days, he was uncertain about what to anticipate from the outside world. While some people were very supportive, others appeared to be quite harsh, largely because of his connection to a film family. Abhay mentioned that many perceived him as privileged but unworthy. In his words:
“I never knew what to expect either some were overly favourable, or they were extremely harsh because they saw me as privileged and undeserving of that privilege.”
Abhay Deol recalls being humiliated after one of his teachers insulted him
In the same interview, Abhay Deol recounted an incident where he faced humiliation at the hands of one of his private tutors. He revealed that this teacher would publicly insult and demean him, often making remarks about his family. Abhay mentioned that the teacher would even go as far as announcing in class certain information about his family that could make headlines, directing these comments specifically at him. The actor admitted to being shocked by such behavior at the time, but as an adult, he came to realize that the teacher must have been dealing with personal issues to treat a child so harshly, especially by dragging his family into it. Describing how ruthless the teacher was, Abhay said:
“She would publicly humiliate me, passing comments about my family, and if something was in the news, she would say it loudly in class, like, ‘You people do this.’ As a kid, you get shocked and internalise these things because you can’t speak out. As an adult, I feel she was a very troubled person to insult a child and his family in front of the class. It wasn’t even in a regular class—it was in tuition. My friends kept quiet because of how harshly she spoke about my family.”

In the same interview, Abhay Deol revealed that he moved to New York before the release of *Dev D* because he struggled to cope with the attention and fame that came with his career. He explained that, being a sensitive person, he was uncomfortable with the spotlight and was more drawn to creativity and art. Abhay admitted that he anticipated *Dev D* would be a big success and bring even more fame, which he didn’t want, but he still wished to pursue acting.
