The Hema Commission’s long-awaited report on the Malayalam film industry, released after five years of investigation, has exposed alarming issues plaguing Mollywood. The report highlights a pervasive culture of sexual harassment, abuse, and gender inequality, painting a grim picture of the working environment for women in the industry.

The report reveals that the casting couch remains a significant issue, with sexual favors often tied to employment opportunities, creating an unsafe and exploitative atmosphere for women. “I was shocked to hear accounts of sexual abuse and harassment faced by victims in the Malayalam film industry,” the report states, emphasising the stark contrast between the film industry and other professions. Unlike teaching, medicine, or engineering, where demonstrating skills and passing an interview are usually sufficient for employment, women in cinema face additional, often degrading demands.

The Commission’s findings underscore the male-dominated nature of the Malayalam film industry, describing it as an exclusive “Boys’ Club.” The report notes that discussions about scripts and projects frequently take place during late-night gatherings, often over alcohol. These settings, according to the report, foster an environment where vulgar jokes and sexual innuendos are commonplace, further marginalising women.

Additionally, the report highlights a “culture of silence” that pervades the industry, driven by a fear of the powerful nexus that controls Mollywood. This silence contributes to the ongoing harassment, as victims are reluctant to speak out, fearing retaliation or career repercussions.

The Hema Committee was established in 2017 by the Kerala Government in response to a petition from the Women in Cinema Collective, which sought to address the challenges faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. Despite the prevalence of sexual harassment and abuse, the report notes that many women remain hesitant to report these crimes to the police, largely due to fear and the potential impact on their careers.

The findings of the Hema Commission highlight the urgent need for reform within the Malayalam film industry to create a safer and more equitable environment for women.
