In a candid interview with Vanity Fair published on Monday, 32-year-old singer and actress Selena Gomez revealed her plans for starting a family, acknowledging that her journey toward motherhood will differ significantly from most. The “Calm Down” singer shared for the first time that she is unable to carry her own children due to ongoing medical issues.

Gomez, who underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 following years of battling lupus, spoke openly about her fertility challenges. “I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez disclosed. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

The emotional admission highlighted the difficulty of coming to terms with her situation. Gomez, who is known for hit songs like “Who Says” and her work on Only Murders in the Building, explained that although it was hard to accept at first, she has now found peace. “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it,” she said. “I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. [But] I’m in a much better place with that.”

Despite the personal challenges, Gomez expressed gratitude for alternative options such as surrogacy and adoption, which she described as “huge possibilities” for her. “It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby,” she added.

In the interview, Gomez also touched on her personal life, revealing that she has been dating record producer Benny Blanco since July 2023. Reflecting on her previous years, she noted, “I was single for five years, with the exception of going on a few dates.” This period of introspection led her to realize the importance of family in her life.

Gomez’s honest discussion sheds light on the challenges she faces as she looks forward to motherhood, underscoring her resilience and positive outlook on her future as a parent.
