National Award-winning actor Rishab Shetty has sparked controversy following remarks in which he criticized Bollywood for frequently portraying India in a negative light. Shetty, who won the Best Actor award for his role in Kantara, made the comments during an interview with MetroSaga, stating that Indian films, particularly those from Bollywood, often showcase the country in a less favourable manner at international events.

“Indian films, particularly Bollywood, often portray India negatively. These so-called art films get showcased at international events and receive special attention. For me, my nation, my state, and my language are sources of pride. I believe in presenting them in a positive light to the world, and that’s exactly what I strive to do,” Shetty said, as reported by The Times of India.

RISHAB SHETTY: Indian films, especially Bollywood shows India in a Bad light, touted as art films, getting invited to global event, red carpets. However, Shetty’s remarks have not gone down well with many on social media, who were quick to point out scenes from Kantara that they felt were problematic. A Reddit user shared a clip from the film showing Shetty’s character pinching co-star Sapthami Gowda’s waist, questioning the actor’s stance on positive portrayals of India. The post was captioned, “Meanwhile Rishab Shetty in his own film,” and quickly gained traction.

Critics on Reddit did not hold back. One user commented, “Also another scene where he was peeking when she is bathing. It was really uncomfortable to watch. No doubt the movie was great, but sexual harassment is too normalized in Indian cinema.” Another user criticised South Indian cinema more broadly, saying, “Back when I was a child, I realised that there was something wrong with South Indian songs. Later, I realised it was the navel. They sexualise it a lot.”

The backlash continued with another user calling Shetty’s success inflated: “This guy made one hit movie and is now thinking he’s some Steven Spielberg. Kantara is an overhyped movie with little to no rewatch value and got lucky with the anti-Bollywood wave that opened up avenues for regional cinema.”

Despite the controversy, Shetty expressed his gratitude after winning the National Award, saying, “I am truly overwhelmed by the honor of this National Award for Kantara. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of this journey, the incredible team of artists, technicians, and especially Hombale Films.”

Kantara, released in 2022, is set in a fictional village in Dakshina Kannada and follows the story of a Kambala champion, played by Shetty, who confronts a forest range officer. The film, which Shetty also wrote and directed, features Sapthami Gowda, Kishore, Achyuth Kumar, Pramod Shetty, and Prakash Thuminad.
