Singer-songwriter Halsey, 29, recently shared a deeply personal and distressing moment from her career on the SHE MD podcast, as reported by People magazine. The artist recounted experiencing a miscarriage at the age of 20 while performing on stage.
“I miscarried during a concert,” Halsey revealed. “I started miscarrying before the show. And I was in a really tough position because it was really early on in my career and there was a lot attached to the show.”
Halsey elaborated on the immense pressure she faced at the time. “There was a corporate partner, there was a greater media entity partner, but more importantly than that to me, there (were) a thousand kids who waited all day long to get into this show and see me. And what ended up happening was I ended up just putting on an adult diaper.”
The singer explained that she was asked to perform for 45 minutes, a challenging feat given her limited discography at the time. Despite the physical and emotional turmoil, she went on with the performance.
“After I left the stage, I threw up in the parking lot. I went to a hotel and I was sick all night. I remember sitting in the bathtub because I just didn’t know what to do with all the blood,” she recalled.
Halsey described the grueling aftermath, which included waking up early the next morning to catch a flight to Canada. She emphasised the physical strain she endured, bleeding for hours and struggling to stay on her feet. The concert, which was filmed, remains a difficult memory for her.
“It’s funny because when I look at it now, I see myself just white and sweating, and my voice is different,” she said. “My voice is guttural. I sound and look like a different person.”
Reflecting on the isolation she felt, Halsey noted the lack of support and understanding available at the time. “I don’t know who to talk to about this. Because at the time, the only stories about miscarriage that I had heard were from women who were happily married.”
Halsey’s candid recounting of this painful episode highlights the often unseen struggles faced by performers and the resilience required to navigate personal tragedies under public scrutiny.
