In a candid interview with India Today, actress Malavika Mohanan expressed deep concern over the societal challenges faced by women, particularly in the wake of a recent tragic incident in Kolkata. The brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the city have reignited conversations about women’s safety, a topic that Malavika feels strongly about.

Reflecting on the incident, Malavika shared her emotional turmoil. “It broke my heart because we were in the middle of promotions, and here I am talking about female empowerment, playing a character who’s standing up for herself, and then this happened,” she said. “I was so shaken because it’s such a large conversation.”

The actress emphasised the need to address the underlying mindset that perpetuates such acts of violence. “How do we get to the root of this and just stop it?” she questioned. “It makes you feel helpless. It’s the mindset. It’s a patriarchal mindset. But it’s not just about blaming men; it’s about blaming the mindset. A lot of women are also privy to that mindset. We need to attack that and get to the root of it.”

Malavika’s comments come at a time when discussions around gender-based violence are more critical than ever. She expressed her frustration with the recurring nature of these incidents, highlighting that the issue goes beyond individual acts of violence to a deeply ingrained societal problem.
