In December last year, Ranbir Kapoor’s *Animal* hit the big screen, sparking a significant debate within the industry. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film garnered a polarised response, with audiences split over its depiction of masculinity and violence. Despite the controversy, Animal emerged as a blockbuster, continuing to be a topic of discussion months after its release.

Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who is also Kapoor’s father-in-law, recently addressed the criticism in an interview with Hindustan Times. Bhatt emphasized the harsh realities of the entertainment world, noting that artists must navigate these challenges without losing their creative spirit.

“That’s also part of entertainment… It is a bloodsport,” Bhatt remarked, acknowledging the divisive nature of the film’s reception. “You get into the arena, and there will be people celebrating your fall and others celebrating your triumph. That’s part of the game.”

Bhatt further reflected on the difficult path chosen by performers, stating, “You have chosen that life. The world belongs to creators, not to those who merely sit on the sidelines throwing brickbats. It takes a different kind of audacity to be a performer.”

When pressed about the intensity of the criticism, Bhatt was unapologetic. “These are occupational hazards. You can’t have it both ways. If you stand in the sun, you get sunburnt,” he said, underscoring the inevitable challenges artists face.

Beyond his commentary on Animal, Bhatt spoke about his creative involvement in Ab Dilli Dur Nahin, a social drama based on the inspiring journey of a rickshaw puller’s son who becomes an IAS officer. Bhatt, who co-wrote the film, described it as a “story of dreaming big,” noting that it highlights the audacity to dream beyond societal constraints.

Reflecting on the project, Bhatt praised director Kamal Chandra, saying, “He has given wings to narratives that will inspire people across the country.” Bhatt’s continued engagement in the industry showcases his enduring commitment to impactful storytelling, even as he steps back from directing.
