Popular content creator and actor Kusha Kapila is still grappling with the fallout from her recent appearance on a comedy roast. Kapila, who is set to star in the upcoming web series “Life Hill Gayi,” has been candid about the hurtful nature of the jokes made at her expense, which included personal attacks on her body and her divorce from Zorawar Singh Ahluwalia.
In an interview with Fever FM, Kusha Kapila discussed the broader challenges faced by women in the public eye. She noted that societal unkindness toward women is not new, reflecting on her own mother’s experiences. “Society is anyway so unkind to women,” she said. “I completely shut myself off from opinions. I didn’t have the bandwidth for it. My mother can speak very clearly about it.”
Kapila expressed empathy for her mother, who endured similar pressures without the same platform to voice her experiences. “She had to speak to relatives and society. She goes to the temple or the park and faces opinions from her social communities. This is the reality of where and when we live. Despite progress, some things remain the same,” she added.
The actor also highlighted the complexities of online life. “You can’t pick and choose what happens to you online, especially if you’ve opened up your world to many people. You can alter how you share your life moving forward, but you don’t get to pick and choose the consequences. It is unkind, it is unfair, and assumptions will be made,” she said.
Kapila, who also starred in “Thank You for Coming” alongside Bhumi Pednekar, revealed that the roast crossed a line, claiming it “straight up dehumanised” her. She was unaware of the cruel jokes beforehand. In a candid Instagram post, she shared a coping mechanism, writing, “When someone’s trying to disempower you, it’s their garbage. It’s not yours to store. Let it slide off you.”
The roast, part of comedian Ashish Solanki’s “Pretty Good Roast Show,” featured several comedians, including Samay Raina, Aaditya Kulshreshth, Shreya Priyam Roy, and Gurleen Pannu, who all targeted Kapila. Kapila described Raina’s jokes as “unkind” and shared her experience of sitting through the harsh performance, which was shot in January and recently released on YouTube.
