In a recent interview, actor Manu Rishi tearfully recalled the profound experience of laying his friend and Angrezi Medium co-star, Irrfan Khan, to rest. Despite nearly missing the chance due to Covid-19 restrictions, Manu managed to attend the burial, an experience that has stayed with him deeply. “I placed sandalwood on Irrfan before burying him with my own hands,” he shared, describing the moment as both intimate and heart-wrenching.
Reflecting on his relationship with Irrfan, Manu spoke about their final interactions and the deep sense of loss he felt. He remembered visiting the Hindi Medium set solely to embrace Irrfan, realizing that his friend was gradually slipping away. “I knew I needed to gather as many memories with him as I could,” Manu admitted, highlighting the poignant bond they shared.
During the interview with the Red Mike YouTube channel, Manu also revealed how Irrfan had once recommended him to a prominent director. When the director questioned Manu’s credentials, Manu boldly defended his abilities, urging the director to trust either his work or Irrfan’s recommendation. This confrontation was later met with unexpected praise from Irrfan, who, instead of reprimanding him, commended Manu for his courage. Upon visiting Manu that evening, Irrfan remarked, “Either you will die, or you will survive. This self-respect that you have is very correct,” leaving a lasting impression on Manu.
The 2020 film Angrezi Medium, directed by Homi Adajania, was one of Irrfan Khan’s final projects. Starring Irrfan, Radhika Madan, and Kareena Kapoor Khan, the film follows a father’s journey to help his daughter achieve her dream of studying in London. Irrfan’s performance as Champak was lauded for its emotional depth, exemplifying the understated brilliance that defined his career.
Irrfan Khan, who passed away in April 2020 from a neuroendocrine tumor, was celebrated for his versatility in both Bollywood and Hollywood. His legacy endures through iconic roles in films like The Lunchbox, Life of Pi, and Hindi Medium. His loss continues to be felt across the world of cinema.
