In a recent interview, actor Vikram Kapadia, known for his roles in films and series such as Kapoor and Sons, Scam 1992, and The Night Manager, opened up about the payment practices of major Bollywood production houses. While discussing the longstanding debate over actor fees amid the entourage culture in the industry, Kapadia revealed insights into the payment dynamics of renowned companies like Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Yash Raj Films.
Kapadia, who has worked extensively in the industry, acknowledged that both Dharma and Yash Raj Films often offer lower pay under the pretext of providing valuable opportunities. “Yash Raj and Dharma have this ego that we are Yash Raj and Dharma, so we will pay you a little less, but you should be happy because we are paying you,” he stated. He suggested that this attitude contributes to actors’ concerns regarding compensation, noting that these companies capitalise on their prestigious reputations.
Despite these challenges, Kapadia emphasised that both production houses are punctual with payments, which is a significant positive aspect of their operations. He noted that while the pay may be lower, actors can expect timely remuneration, making it a somewhat fair trade-off. “I think they do that with everyone. I think that’s why actors are concerned,” he added.
Kapadia’s experience with Yash Raj Films was notably positive; he reported being compensated fairly and without delays or issues during his work with the studio. This sentiment highlights a nuanced view of the industry’s payment practices, suggesting that while big names may have inflated egos, they do maintain professional standards regarding payments.
In a related development, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions recently sold a 50 per cent stake in the company to Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India. Poonawalla aims to expand his influence in the entertainment sector through his new venture, Serene Productions.
Dharma Productions, established in 1976 by Karan Johar’s father, Yash Johar, is celebrated for iconic films such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. It is currently preparing to release Shankara, starring Akshay Kumar, and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, featuring Varun Dhawan.
Meanwhile, Yash Raj Films, founded in 1970 by Yash Chopra, is known for hits like Mohabbatein and the Dhoom series. Both production houses continue to play significant roles in shaping Bollywood’s cinematic landscape.
