Television actress Kamya Panjabi recently expressed her views on women’s safety within the entertainment industry, focusing particularly on the television sector. In an exclusive interview with News 18, Panjabi asserted that the television industry is currently one of the safest environments for women in the entertainment world, claiming that sexual abuse is not prevalent in this sector.
A Safe Space for Women
Reflecting on the work culture in Hindi television, Kamya Panjabi described the industry as “very clean,” contrasting it with the potential issues in other segments of the entertainment industry. “Television has been very clean. I don’t know what used to happen in the past, but now it is very clean. There is no such filth here,” Panjabi said. She highlighted that in today’s TV industry, there is no coercion, blackmail, or casting couch culture. According to Panjabi, if an actor fits a role and possesses the necessary talent, they will be selected based on merit alone.
Panjabi further emphasised that the television industry is a secure environment for women. “I feel television is the safest place in the entertainment industry. Sexual abuse does not happen here. Whatever happens is because there is mutual consent,” she stated, adding that no one in the industry pressures others into compromising situations with the promise of a role.
Setting Boundaries and Speaking Up
Panjabi also touched on the issue of inappropriate behavior, noting that while some actors may have a reputation as womanisers, such behavior can be stopped by setting clear boundaries. “If you make it very clear, such things do not happen. Nobody is being forced to do this,” she explained.
Panjabi reassured that women in television do not have to worry about unwanted advances if they speak up. “If you tell them, ‘Hello, I don’t like it,’ you will not be touched,” she said, reiterating that the television industry does not tolerate forced behavior.
