Television actress Chahatt Khanna, known for her roles in popular shows such as Bade Acche Lagte Hai, has revealed that she felt “brainwashed” into converting to Islam during her marriage to ex-husband Farhan Mirza. In a candid interview with Telly Talk India, Khanna expressed gratitude for having returned to her original spiritual beliefs after a tumultuous period in her life.
Chahatt Khanna, who grew up in a spiritually inclined household, decided to convert after marrying Farhan Mirza, the son of screenwriter Shahrukh Mirza. Reflecting on her experience, she admitted to feeling confused during and after her marriage. “Yes, in a way, yeah, I would say that [I was brainwashed]. But I don’t know if it was for their good or my good. Thankfully, I am back home now,” she stated.
The actress recounted that many people warned her against converting, and she faced numerous restrictions after doing so. “A lot of people did not want me to convert, but I did because I wanted to do nikaah. Not that I was forced to convert, but I chose to. After that, I was told, ‘Don’t worship your god, probably that is not the correct way; this is the correct way,’ and being a lost child, I followed that path,” Khanna explained.
Despite the challenges she faced during that time, Khanna reflected positively on her current state. “I think it was fine; it was not that bad. But now, I am in a much happier space. I have more wisdom; I know what I am doing. I know what is correct and what is not, and I am living a very conscious life,” she added.
Work-life
Chahatt Khanna began her entertainment career at the age of 16, debuting in a chocolate advertisement in 2002. She transitioned to acting with her role in the television show Sachi Baat Sabhi Jag Jane the same year. Over the years, she has also appeared in films such as Thank You and Prassthanam.
Khanna’s personal life has been marked by significant ups and downs. In 2006, she married businessman Bharat Narsinghani, but the union ended the following year amid accusations of physical and emotional abuse. She later married Farhan Mirza in 2013, only to file for divorce in 2018, citing sexual and mental harassment. Her recent reflections highlight a journey of self-discovery and empowerment as she embraces her roots once again.
