Bollywood’s iconic 1998 family drama, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, directed by Karan Johar, continues to resonate with audiences over two decades later. The film, headlined by Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, became a cultural touchstone for its portrayal of friendship and love. Beyond its storyline, the movie’s bold, unconventional fashion trends left a lasting impact on viewers.

Recently, filmmaker KaranKaran Johar took to Instagram to share a nostalgic video highlighting memorable moments from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, with a focus on the film’s distinct wardrobe choices. In the video, Shah Rukh Khan candidly reflected on his discomfort wearing the tight, trendy outfits of the time, revealing that he felt “embarrassed” by the snug costumes he had to don for his role as the youthful, stylish college student, Rahul.

“The most embarrassing moment is the costumes that I have to wear when I am playing the young guy,” Khan recalled. “Mujhe lagta hai meri jeans zyada tight hai, T-shirt zyada tight hai (I feel my jeans and T-shirt are too tight), and I am supposed to play the college stud in my youth. I have to say, walk, and talk, and do certain things which I am embarrassed to do.”

The throwback video also featured a variety of scenes showcasing Khan’s unique ensembles throughout the film. One notable anecdote was about a deleted scene where Khan’s character, Rahul, throws a basketball behind him without looking, and it miraculously goes through the hoop. Despite being cut from the final film, it remains a fond memory for the actor.

In the caption accompanying the video, Johar commented on the enduring relevance of many fashion choices in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, such as belt bags, oversized hoodies, and graffiti jeans. However, he humorously noted that the “Lycra tight tees” Khan wore in the film are a fashion faux pas today. “Bhai was so uncomfortable in those bright tight garments and yet pulled them off with main fashioncore energy,” Johar wrote.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai remains beloved for its timeless dialogues, iconic songs, and performances. The film centers on a love triangle between Anjali (Kajol), Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), and Tina (Rani Mukerji), with a guest appearance by Salman Khan.
