Actress Meher Vij opened up about her experiences in the entertainment industry, particularly addressing the challenges of being typecast as a mother. Known for her powerful performances in blockbuster films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Secret Superstar, Vij expressed her determination to pursue substantial roles that reflect the complexity and strength of women.

“I’m not somebody who’ll do a project for the sake of doing it,” VijVij asserted in a recent interview with NDTV. “I choose roles wisely. I want a substantial trajectory for my role and career.” Her comments highlight a growing sentiment among actresses who seek to break free from traditional portrayals and explore diverse character arcs.

Following her acclaimed performances, Vij revealed that she received numerous offers but felt many did not align with her vision. “After Secret Superstar, I received a lot of offers, but I didn’t get the work I wanted to do,” she noted. “I don’t want to see myself in a box. I don’t want to be a monotonous actor.” This desire to avoid being pigeonholed underscores the actress’s commitment to expanding the narrative possibilities for women in cinema.

Rejecting the notion that her previous roles should define her future, Vij emphasised, “I said, ‘I don’t want to do this. I’m not here to play a certain type of role. I want to see myself in stronger characters.’” She pointed out that while her character in Bajrangi Bhaijaan was not weak, there is a pressing need for more powerful roles for women, suggesting that they are capable of much more than traditional narratives allow. “Women can step up and do some action or take on different roles. They will surprise you,” she added.

Her performance in Secret Superstar earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Beyond film, Vij has also made notable appearances in television shows, including Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil and Ram Milaye Jodi, showcasing her versatility as an actress.
