Soha Ali Khan Reveals She Still Faces Trolling For Inter-Religious Marriage With Kunal ‘If We Post..’

In a recent conversation, Soha Ali Khan opened up about how she still faces trolling for marrying her husband, Kunal Kemmu, due to their differing religious backgrounds. The daughter of legendary actress Sharmila Tagore and former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Soha tied the knot with actor Kunal Kemmu in 2015.

However, their union wasn’t universally embraced at the time. Over the years, the couple has continued to face scrutiny over their interfaith marriage. Speaking in a new interview, Soha reflected on the issue and shared her thoughts on the deep-rooted societal conditioning that fuels such reactions.

Soha Ali Khan says she has become thick-skinned towards trolling about her interfaith marriage

Soha Ali Khan recently had a candid conversation with Screen, where she opened up about being targeted online for some of her personal life choices. She revealed that she’s faced trolling for not having a son, but emphasized that she feels deeply fulfilled as a mother to her daughter, Innaya. Another aspect of her life that has drawn unnecessary criticism is her marriage to Kunal Kemmu, which some have commented on due to their differing religious backgrounds. Addressing this, Soha shared:

“I have gotten a bit thick-skinned; it doesn’t bother me. But one thing that amuses me is how when I post something, people start commenting upon my religion. Because I have married into a Hindu family, my mother has a Hindu surname, and she married a Muslim person. Usually, if we post something on Diwali, they are like how many rozas have you kept, if we post on Holi, comments are reading what kind of Muslim you are? It doesn’t bother me, but it is something that I do notice. We get happiness by bitching about people.”

Soha Ali Khan reveals her mother and grandmother’s struggle made way for her progress

During the conversation, Soha candidly shared how the women in her family had to overcome significant societal challenges due to deeply ingrained gender norms. She revealed that her grandmother had aspired to pursue a postgraduate degree at a time when women were discouraged from higher education, an opportunity readily available to men. Despite the odds, her grandmother persisted and ultimately fulfilled her dream.

Similarly, Soha’s mother faced scrutiny for her decision to act in films, with people often questioning how her husband had “allowed” her to do so. However, both women chose to follow their passions, and their courage paved the way for Soha herself. Reflecting on this legacy, she said: “My grandmother wanted to do an MA in Bengal, but she was not allowed to because men went away and were allowed to study and pursue higher education. Women were simply not allowed to. But she persisted and fought that battle; it cost her Rs 50 to do her MA. Her father said I’ll give you a Banarasi saree for 50 bucks, but she insisted on studying. She was the first woman in our family, one of the first women in Bengal to do an MA.”
