Kareena Kapoor Khan on Seeing Intimacy as a Human Experience
Kareena Kapoor Khan has rarely acted in intimate scenes during her more than twenty-year career. She has shared her reasons for this before, but now she has talked about how Indian audiences and Western audiences view intimacy differently.
“I personally feel like it’s not important to take a story forward. It’s not something that I feel is required in the narrative to show that. I know that I might not be comfortable doing that on screen. I never have done it. It’s just the way we look at the whole idea. We don’t look at sexuality or sex as a human experience.
Kareena Kapoor Khan emphasised the importance of respecting intimacy before showing it on screen. She noted that India is not as open about sex as Western countries are. She also pointed out that while female desire is openly discussed in the West, it’s not the same in India.
“We have to start looking at and respecting that a lot more before we put it on screen. It’s my belief. Where I am coming from is the fact that we are still not as open as you are, having the narrative out there for you to experience so freely. While female desire is openly tackled in the West, it has always been so open about it.”
Kareena Kapoor had once played the role of a sex worker
Kareena Kapoor once played a sex worker in the film Chameli, released in 2003. This role helped her discover her confidence and sensuality at a young age. She mentioned that it encouraged her to be fearless and more open to exploring difficult and dark topics, even after 25 years in the film industry.
Kareena Kapoor mentioned she won’t do intimate scenes in her films
Kareena Kapoor Khan has mentioned why she avoids intimate scenes in her films. In 2003, after the release of Chameli, she spoke openly with Syed Firdaus Ashraf. He compared her role as ‘Chameli’ to Waheeda Rehman’s famous performance as ‘Gulabo’ in Pyaasa. Some critics said the film lacked sex appeal. Kareena responded to these comments during the interview.
“When trade people saw Chameli, they were like, ‘Arre Chameli mein thoda sex missing tha.’ They don’t understand that in Pyaasa, Waheedaji was not doing sex scenes. I am sorry, you cannot expect Raj Kapoor’s granddaughter to do those kinds of scenes.”
